the South and West sides can now be seen along the fence on Stony Island at the site of the Obama Presidential Center. The three-panel mural was recently unveiled and created in partnership with Chicago based artist Brandon Breaux and 15 talented students attending the Dyett High School for the Arts. It centers the students’ inspiring voices and represents the culture of the community that gave the Obamas so much. For weeks, students worked with Brandon to create a piece that would inspire passersby. To him, the project was more than a collection of collage images and colors, and more than a tribute to the Obamas. It is a powerful statement of community, opportunity, and of the enduring legacy of the city. The cover was commissioned by Grand Central Publishing in May of 2021 lead by art director Albert Austin Tang.The book is a national best seller and the audio book, performed by Don Cheadle, went on to win the Grammy for the best spoken word album at the 64th annual awards celebration. As we all know many plans got interrupted in 2020 so the project which was supposed to support in inperson event turned more into a general collaboration to support a virtual version of Tuesdays on the Terrace. The design began to take the form of an investigation of institution, taking on the themes Access, Representation and Inclusion. The collaboration culminated with an impromptu public meditation on the museum’s terrace. You can read about this demonstration on the activations page of this site. It brought me some hard-earned lessons on being a first-time homeowner but it also brought me back to the neighborhood where I grew up. As I stripped paint and renovated parts of the house, I began to sit with memories of my family and some of our everyday experiences that have been so important to building my worldview and sense of identity. BIG WORDS represents the resulting deep questioning of all aspects of my identity, and a desire to both acknowledge and share this experience, while also constructing the personal language and point of view that shapes how I move through the world. How do we use language to inform our reality? To survive and create boundaries? How do we find the freedom to thoughtfully speak in our own language without the pressure to edit or code-switch to suit a different context?
